"Nataraja"
Oil on canvas, 51" x 51" This is the largest painting I've done as yet. It happened thanks to a generous commission given by a dear friend. "Nataraja" came to life in my studio as I read Dancing Wu Li Masters and listened to Shiva Stotras. |
A circle of life and death held within us as we dance thru the cosmos. The movement of our bodies as we engage with the energies around us. A divine dance without purpose. To dance because its the very nature of our beings. I felt a kinship because its how I feel when I paint. To be in complete harmony and not controlling the outcome. Shiva's dance caught in one fleeting moment with his hair flying and circles of pure energy radiating from him. The symbols associated with Shiva worship come to rest as radiating lines of white light on the outer circle of this energetic piece.
My own association between Shiva and Quantum physics made sense when I read Fritjof Capra's words, in his The Tao of Physics, relating the Nataraj’s dance with modern physics: “every subatomic particle not only performs an energy dance, but also is an energy dance; a pulsating process of creation and destruction…without end…For the modern physicists then, Shiva’s dance is the dance of subatomic matter. As in Hindu mythology, it is a continual dance of creation and destruction involving the whole cosmos; the basis of all existence and of all natural phenomena.” I felt relief in painting this image. It helped me understand my love for the dance between spirituality and science. I may go on to paint more versions but this composition and form is directly from that first meditation on Shiva as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer. |
